Chinese numbers 1-100: chart and worksheets

The chart is one A4 page. The generator makes a new sheet in characters, pinyin or both, with the answer key as its own file.

Chinese numbers worksheet generator

A new set of numbers each time, with the ones pupils get wrong mixed in (十二 and 二十, 一百零五, 两千). The answer key is its own file.

The figure is printed; pupils write the number in the script you picked.

No sign-up, no watermark. Simplified characters; pinyin in dictionary tones.

What the sheets drill

Each sheet is drawn at random but not evenly: up to a third of the questions come from the places Mandarin learners go wrong, and the rest are spread so that every ten in the range is covered.

  • 十二 (12) against 二十 (20): the order of the characters is the whole difference.
  • 十 alone at the start of 11 to 19, but 一十 inside a bigger number: 一百一十 is 110.
  • One 零 for a gap, however many zeros it stands for: 一千零五 is 1,005.
  • 两 at the start of 200, 2,000 and 20,000; 二 inside a number, as in 一千二百.
  • Counting in 万: 100,000 is 十万, ten ten-thousands, and the counting runs above 10,000 step across that boundary.

Exercises: write the Chinese for a figure, write the figure for the Chinese, matching pairs, counting runs with gaps, and a mixed review that ends with two runs. A recipe link rebuilds the same sheet on any computer, so a sheet can be set as homework and opened again for marking.

Sharing to Google Classroom

The Classroom button on a finished sheet is an ordinary link to Classroom's own share page with the sheet's address in it; no Google script runs on this site. The text and CSV exports give the figure and the Chinese one pair to a line, for flashcard apps or a spreadsheet.

Questions from learners and teachers

What does the 1-100 chart show?

One A4 page with every number from 1 to 100 as a figure, in simplified characters and in Hanyu Pinyin with tone marks, ten to a row so each row is one ten. The tens are picked out in jade and the numbers learners mix up (十二 and 二十, the 十 that opens 11 to 19, 一百) in persimmon. Zero sits above the grid. It prints on US Letter with fit-to-page left on.

Can pupils work in pinyin before they write characters?

Yes. The "Write in" control switches the sheet and its key together between characters (三十四), pinyin with tone marks (sānshísì) and both on one line. Pinyin sheets ask pupils to mark every tone. The key prints dictionary tones, so 一 is yī; a pupil who writes the spoken tone change (yìbǎi) is also right, and the on-screen key says so.

How does the answer key treat 两 and 二?

Sheets print 两 where a 2 opens the number before 百, 千 or 万 (两百, 两千, 两万) and 二 everywhere else (二十, 十二, 一千二百). Both characters are correct before 百, 千 and 万, so the key prints the other form beside the answer, for example 两百五十 (also 二百五十, 两百五). Short forms such as 一百一 for 110 are listed the same way.

Does a pupil sheet show the answers anywhere?

No answer is printed on the pupils’ PDF or on the printed sheet, and a shared link opens with the key hidden. The key is a separate PDF and a separate print. That is what lets you attach the pupils’ file to a Google Classroom or Teams assignment.

How are the answers checked?

Every number from 0 to 1,000,000 is read by the site's engine and by a second program written separately from different tables, and the two are compared character by character and tone mark by tone mark: 32,517,130 checks with no disagreement. The method and every decision behind it are on the "How we check" page.

Can I put my school or class name on the sheet?

Yes. Type it in the optional "School or class" field and it prints at the top of every page of the sheet and of the key, in English, pinyin or Chinese characters. It travels with the link if you share the sheet.
